Horsethief Lake & Deerfield Reservoir

Hill City is called the 'Heart of the Hills' for a reason.  Within 20 miles there are a dozen primo lakes to choose from.  Horsethief Lake is the closest at 6 miles. It is nestled behind Mount Rushmore and is a small 30 acre lake.  Deerfield Lake, 20 miles away is much larger at 430 acres.  Both are non-motized lakes.

Recreational Leisure Paddling

Speckled throughout the Black Hills, from north to south, we are blessed with over 25 public accessible flatwater lakes.  Some are big, others quaint and small.  Click the button below learn more.

Go with the flow

Yes, we have whitewater paddling!  The season typically runs from April through June.  It is heavily dependent on winter moisture.  From Class I to IV, our streams are great for taking your paddling skills to the next level.
